A weekly roundup of talking points, sans effort

Worth the paper it’s printed on?

Last week’s light news success stories included…

…Simon Cowell’s personal life, and The Voice winning the ratings war with Britain’s Got Talent, which repeatedly hit headlines and resulted in 192 stories, whereas George Osborne’s pledge to give £10million to the IMF only led to 40…

…Tulisa’s regrets about that sex tape, which gave rise to 44 articles, in contrast India’s successful test of a long range missile only made it into 29…

…and finally, Tupac’s holographic tour hit 34 headlines, whilst President Obama’s plea for peace following an escalation of fighting at the Sudan border only made it into 23.

Non alcoholic beer- it tastes pretty bad and doesn’t do us any more favours than the real stuff. A marketing nightmare you may say… until watching this, the first intelligent on-screen appearance from Charlie Sheen in years.

People are becoming increasingly wary of large brands, as such for Walmart to be exposed for paying millions of dollars in bribes to advance the company in the Mexican marketplace would be damaging. As such if a representative from said firm then tried to defend such actions by simply saying ‘it was six years ago’, it would surely note bode well for the firm’s public appearance.

Battle of the tweets: Manchester vs London vs UK

Top Manchester #tags (seven days to 26/4/2012)

#mufc #mcfc

#thevoiceuk #manchester

#cfc #thevoice

#awaydaymemories #towie

#wordsyourillneverhearmesay #together

A healthy dose of positivity is inherent in Manchester this week, what with the city name trending alone, and #together cropping up. Good times ahead then, maybe.

Top London #tags (seven days to 26/4/2012)

#thevoiceuk #cfc

#londonmarathon #leveson

#f1 #thevoice

#mufc #wordsyourillneverhearmesay

In contrast to up North those in the capital have been focusing on current affairs this week- so that’s the #londonmarathon and the #leveson enquiry, to name but two.

Top UK #tags (seven days to 26/4/2012)

#ff #thevoiceuk

This week the rest of the UK has been following a similar pattern to its two largest cities, a la #leveson. On top of that a load of people are talking about the #londonmarathon outside the capital, which is pretty good too.

That was The Blagger’s Blog, a selection of statements, statistics and noteworthy newsies from across the media and social world, amalgamated, allowing the time-starved professional to start a conversation from thin air.

The price of (retained) fame

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

Summer is approaching, with warm weather hopefully on the horizon. Already though it feels like silly season has arrived given the extreme measures people have been taking simply to secure their place in the popularity rankings.

It’s certainly nothing new, celebs rise to prominence only to then find their popularity on the wane. But how far is too far when it comes to selling your story, personality, or brand image in the name of bolstering that public profile?

Recent weeks have provided countless talking points on this issue. A certain music industry big-wig’s ‘unauthorised’ biography springs to mind as the most glaring example. Apparently Mr Cowell had been a little evasive with the book’s writer, Tom Bower, and some of the ‘revelations’ inside have been revealed much to the displeasure of its subject. But then let’s look at the surrounding evidence.

X Factor’s ratings are in decline, both in the UK and Stateside, with stiff competition coming from Strictly Come Dancing, The Voice, and that other show Cowell judges, Britain’s Got Talent (with the latter two currently in a ratings war BGT is losing). Coupled with this his last attempt to create something new resulted in the dud Red Or Black, all of which suggests his days on top may be numbered.

With this in mind if the opportunity arose for a biography to be published that puts the once all-powerful host back in the limelight it could benefit all those involved. Not least as contained therein are ‘shocking secrets’ that double up as evidence suggesting Cowell isn’t as camp as his wardrobe decisions and beauty regime suggests. Suffice to say though, he may have (allegedly) had a fling with Dannii Minogue and, way back when, Sinitta, but nobody in this office is convinced.

Sticking on the music front Madonna’s made some bold moves of late too. It’s probably unnecessary to explain that the latest LP from this mature star, MDNA, is a direct reference to illegal drugs she’s arguably too old to still dabble in, so let’s focus on two tracks therein. I F****d Up will clearly raise an eyebrow or two, whilst single Girls Gone Wild, and its accompanying video full of gyrations and chains, is similarly ‘shocking’, though mainly because the woman in question is 54. Now I’m not saying she’s worried about competing in a pop marketplace overrun with successful, younger females, but if she were this would be a logical reaction, albeit one that could potentially traumatise some viewers.

It’s not just musos that come to mind, either. Ricky Gervais’ recent controversial Channel 4 pilot Derek, which was accused of poking fun at a guy who may be academically and socially challenged, has come at a time when the comedian’s reputation is at its lowest. Idiot Abroad is OK, but The Ricky Gervais Show isn’t, at all. Again, to insinuate that following the runaway successes of Extras and The Office the funnyman’s lack of smash hits has led to a crisis of (egotistical) confidence, which in turn gave rise to his decision to go for a sensitive, ratings-grabbing subject matter, would be speculation. But it does make perfect sense.

Whatever the reality there’s no denying extreme measures can lead to a measured increase in sales, but then how many times have we seen this happen, only to then witness the celebrity continue falling from the front page after the smoke finally clears? So is it a good idea to go to such lengths in order to stay in the press? Furthermore, do you think these examples can be labelled as mere attempts to generate publicity? Why not share your own thoughts on the matter via the comments form below and let’s see if they match our own theory.

Big ideas, small budgets: why creativity doesn’t cost the Earth

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

A company’s marketing power is only measurable by the innovation inherent in the team responsible. Times are tough for all businesses right now, so it pays to understand you don’t have to receive a huge bill for making equally sized waves.

We’re never ones to blow our own trumpet too loudly, or without due cause. Yet it would be a gross oversight not to begin by referencing our own ongoing work in this context. Last year saw us take home national awards for providing cutting edge, not to mention memorable PR services to Panda, the all-natural healthy snack brand, delivered with real value for money- exemplary of the case in point.

Bringing things back up to date most recently we launched the Panda Balboa video across platforms like YouTube, racking up 26,000+ views on said site alone, in just over a week. As with anything aimed at going viral when looking for the true reach of such a clip one needs to take into account the fact this will then be shared with friends on other networks, who in turn will share with friends of friends and so on, for as long as such web services exist.

So what’s it all about? Well, our friends at Panda are celebrating their 30th birthday so we were tasked with amplifying that in a fun and memorable manner. Then we discovered the Rocky classic Eye Of The Tiger was also 30, which inspired us…

This is evidence enough, but perhaps it’s also relevant to reference the international column inches grabbed by another of our Panda stunts, which saw a liquorice mural of Prince William laid out on a busy Manchester thoroughfare. The idea was good enough to be selected for ITV News and BBC Breakfast, now filmed in neighbouring Salford, and again shows a cost-effective way of making a mountain of coverage from a relatively mole-hill sized investment.

The point is that whatever your business it’s important to remember in 2012 time, effort and innovation are really all it takes to achieve the kind of exposure once only possible through huge expenditure. Food PR, for example, no longer needs to be intrinsically linked with celebrity chef endorsement and associated imagery, and this rule applies across marketplaces and business models. Stepping into the new financial year provides a good opportunity to re-appraise old practices, so why not take time out to find the right professionals or come up with a great idea internally, and give your small undertakings a truly global presence.

Tablets, magazines, and more media developments

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

It’s the job of every public relations agency to keep an eye on the latest from the industry frontline, and recently there have been a few firsts that have really been worth talking about. Without further ado then, let’s cut to the chase.

First up WRG’s new Manchester United Events website boasts a unique approach to utilising everyone’s favourite new gadget, the iPad 3. Taking full advantage of the device’s built in motion detection accelerometer visitors to manutd.com/unitedevents can now explore Old Trafford’s many facilities from the comfort of anywhere by simply moving their tablet around to take in views from innumerable angles.

Sticking with Apple’s celebrated market leader, Stuff magazine has just become publishing giant Haymarket’s first fully interactive title after launching a brand new, ‘purpose built’ iPad edition. Obviously this isn’t the first monthly in a hand-held format and it won’t be the last, but it’s still a clear sign of where surely most print businesses should be heading- not least as a 12 month subscription to the all singing, all dancing electronic version will only set readers back £23.99.

Of course we also believe that there will still be glossies (not to mention dailies) left in the decades to come, especially given the loyal readership inherent in high-end magazine culture, and the perception of such publications as trend-setting entities. With that in mind it’s interesting to see global fashion powerhouse Elle has announced David Beckham will be the first solo male cover star in its history, a move that shows a marked change of policy from the usual supermodel and female celebrity lead pictures.

On top of this the very nature of how we assess the number of eyes reading national newspapers has just gone through a wholesale change. As of this month data published by the Audit Bureau of Circulation, the body in charge of collating these figures, will now include a weekday daily average, and a Saturday average, as oppose to a combination of the two. The overall idea being to increase transparency and give you, the potential advertiser, a better idea as to exactly how far your budget is going to go, if and when you buy some page space.

At first glance these developments may seem innocuous enough, but what’s interesting is that they all represent the lengths content providers and curators are currently taking in order to keep up to speed, or get ahead of the curve. Clearly this summary is far from conclusive, given the media is one of the world’s fastest-changing industries. As such we’d recommend keeping regular tabs on our blog, to ensure ideas and innovations like these don’t pass you by unnoticed.

April 2012 in the Smoking Gun study

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

Weather wise it’s been a mixed bag lately. Dry heat fell into damp cold as the month got going, with only moderate improvements emerging in the last few days. Thankfully though, with a new client and a host of fresh projects, we’ve had plenty on our minds other than the outside temperature.

Firstly let’s introduce the latest addition to our client list, Durgol. A major force in the European domestic consumables market, the brand, which manufactures household cleaning products, is now launching in the UK with a coffee machine de-limescaler. The firm has charged us to deal with both consumer and trade media responsibilities, and so our experience in the homes, food, and drink industries will no doubt be put to good use.

Here at Smoking Gun we’ve also developed a strong reputation working with sports clients, from Manchester United to Burrda. That’s part of the reason we feel so confidently about our ability to meet the requirements set out by Men’s Health magazine when we were hired to handle public relations for its forthcoming Survival of the Fittest challenge.

These contests have been held in UK cities for a couple of years now, but this is the first time our hometown will host the competition. Next month will see a demo event held in Spinningfields, with sporting types racing across an urban obstacle course. The spectacle will give people a great idea of what’s set to happen come September, when the public can get involved for the inaugural Manchester edition, with previous instalments having looked something like this:

On top of all that our team will also be helping promote the forthcoming Travel, Leisure & Tourism North Conference. May 24th sees the illustrious Chester Racecourse welcome professionals from said sectors, who will converge to discuss developments, trends, and issues in their industries, with the focus on England’s northern regions. Naturally it gives us great pleasure to be working alongside the organisers, and our part as sponsor is indicative of a commitment to assisting in retaining and improving the wider local economy.

Like we said, there’s a lot going on right now, and things are only set to get busier as the summer months start setting in. Long days, and often even longer nights are fast approaching, bringing with them Britain’s outdoor, cafe-culture season and all its numerous events. Needless to say we’re looking forward to the opportunities this time of year brings, whilst staying firmly focused on the work at hand, albeit with two fingers crossed the next few months deliver at least a few warm weeks.

Simply unmissable 4

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

The web’s full of wonderful things. This month everything from marketing campaigns promoting good manners to Tupac resurrected via Star Wars caught our (almost) all-seeing eye, so when you’ve got a spare five minutes why not sit back and enjoy. After all, some of the following can be considered research…

Statistic of the month

Globally 600million more people own a mobile phone than use a toothbrush.

Cult clips

London’s Kensington Hotel is reiterating what makes Britain Britain with this gem of a publicity stunt. ‘Petite Etiquette’ is a new one-hour class being offered to children, complimentary, so they know their damned Ps from their cursed Qs.

This year marked the 20th anniversary of the text message, and so Moleskine, the firm behind the world’s finest notebooks, took it upon itself to celebrate with the unique Moleskine Shooting Message System. Ah, those were indeed the days.

Even years after his death people were claiming to have seen Tupac in such exotic locales as Keighley, West Yorkshire. They might have been wrong but here at Smoking Gun we’ve found him in a galaxy far, far away- here’s the evidence.

The Olympics arrive soon, so it would be pretty interesting for someone to analyse the sporting festival from a social media perspective… many thanks to Alltop.com for alerting us to this, and Olympic.org for putting it together then.

Worth the paper it’s printed on?

Last week’s light news success stories included…

…On Direction being sued for $1million, whilst touring Australia, and Rihanna’s desire to hook up with band member Harry Styles, which collectively appeared in 88 articles, seven more than the 81 that reported on Instagram being bought for $1billion by Facebook…

…Rihanna promoting her new, rather dubious looking film, Battleship, and managing to get the title into 73 stories, whilst US republican candidate Rick Santorum pulled out of the race to be come his party’s presidential nominee and appeared in just 62…

…and finally, Adele coming out on top of the youngest rich list with a reported stash of £20million (who said the record industry was dead?), the crux of 57 headlines, whereas the National Union of Teachers threatened to strike if their summer break is cut and only 42 reported on the stand-off.

At school you learn the importance of deadlines, but Home Secretary Theresa May apparently didn’t listen, as radical cleric Abu Qatada is sticking on British soil for the time being after his deportation stalls, again, due to Government delays.

A weekly roundup of talking points, sans effort

Worth the paper it’s printed on?

Last week’s light news success stories included…

…Samantha Brick, and the article she wrote about her own beauty, with 54 articles reporting on that self-declaration of greatness, in contrast Sky News admitted to hacking into emails, twice, and only made it into 35…

…Cheryl Cole admitting her interrest in Prince Harry, and showing off her assets in various hot pants, a move that bagged 54 stories, whereas Nick Clegg disagrees with Ken Clarke over the use of secret courts in the UK and just 32 appeared…

…and finally, Katy Perry publicising exactly how upset she was after parting with ex-hubby Russell Brand and admitting celebrity life may be getting a bit boring, an announcement reported by 37 newspapers, but Hilary Clinton’s promise to reduce economic sanctions currently in place against Burma only featured in 33.

$1billion for a faded old picture- shrewd or stupid?

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

As many people who keep an eye on the digital media landscape will already know, this week has seen the sale of a company that designed an image-editing smartfone application fetch a staggering amount of money for its ex-owners. Like us here at one of central Manchester’s best public relations agencies, the final figure paid out may have raised a few eyebrows, but what’s the real value behind this deal?

We are, of course, referring to Instagram, which Facebook has just bought for the not so small sum of $1billion. The programme allows users to take pictures with their phones, and then share them with friends after applying a filter to the photograph to make it look like a Polaroid. So why is making a no-doubt average quality shot (no offence, smartphone users, but you’re hardly Jeremy Bailey) look like an older, but still average shot so valuable to a firm that already has the world and their brother posting status updates on its network.

It’s a query compounded by the fact that we are increasingly being told video, not still imagery, is the future of the internet. But then this notion misses a key point in that Joe Public is a very different beast from Tech Geek and New Media Wizard. In short, those that can be bothered will experiment with video, but anyone who felt a little frustrated after two minutes tinkering on iMovie will almost certainly continue to point and click with a still camera in order to retain a visual record, rather than spending half a day preparing a five minute clip.

Clearly there’s a long way to go before we’re all editing footage to create shorts to share with friends, so for the time being a photograph is still the choice medium for the average social networker with a visual penchant. As such by buying up Instagram Facebook is not only ensuring they control a rival (albeit far smaller) social network, but it’s also claiming a large stake in the burgeoning user generated image marketplace, with the new acquisition already boasting 30million members and counting.

On top of this, as Instagram is used through mobile phones, Zuckerberg and Co have secured another tool with which to target the mobile media customer. It’s a hugely important step, as a large number of Facebook profiles are still only updated from a desktop computer. As such it’s clear there’s more to this than one company simply fancying a pop at photography-focused computer software. Furthermore, these points suggest that whilst there are never guarantees, the real value to the buyer here has potential to reach far beyond what was originally paid.

Facebook most searched brand of 2011

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

New data from internet traffic analyst Experian Hitwise, released at the end of last month, reveals the most searched for brand on the face of the world wide web during 2011 was Facebook, the most popular social network. No surprises there then, as it was the same story 12 months earlier.

YouTube, which is in fact the world’s second most popular search engine, ranked at number two in the list, with the number one option for internet queries- Google- managing seventh in the league, which is rather impressive considering most of our web browsers now link directly to said site, so we don’t have to request it via a search. The planet’s top news website, Mail Online, is the only journalistic outlet aside from the BBC to appear (at #9), with retailers ebay (#3), Amazon (#4), Argos (#5), and Next (#10) all showing up too.

Perhaps the most staggering of all the numbers to come out of the report is that Facebook now represents 2% of all UK internet searches, which if nothing else begs the question ‘why do more people not use bookmarks or auto-complete?’ A copy of the full table is below, whilst the original press release that caught our eye can be found over here at hitwise.com
