A weekly roundup of talking points, sans effort

Thought for the week

“I’m not familiar precisely with what I said, but I’ll stand by what I said, whatever it was.” Mitt Romney on comments he made (and then forgot) about Barack Obama.

Weekly high

With rapidly increasing concerns about the forthcoming presidential elections, U.S. voters that don’t want militant conservatism to take over the White House will most likely be pleased to hear former big chief Clinton showing support and solidarity for Barack Obama, who will look to beat his republican rival to secure four more years in power. Fingers crossed.

Weekly low

As if Nestle needs to worsen its reputation any more, this week a Brazilian court ruled any food containing over 1% genetically modified organisms must be labelled as such. The confectionary giant tried to beat the rap, lost, and gave us a prime example of why corporate transparency is best practice.

Three things that may happen next week…

The identity of the individual who perpetrated the multiple killings in rural France, leaving a number of British tourists dead, could well be discovered, Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney will begin his campaign trail, whilst EU Finance Ministers will meet in Cyprus next Friday to discuss the ongoing continental problems.

Dates for your diary

August 2012 in the Smoking Gun study

Thursday, August 30th, 2012

It’s been business as usual at headquarters this month. So that’s further expansion by way of an increased workplace and brand new senior member of staff, whilst our peers ranked us amongst the region’s finest PR practitioners. A lovely follow up to last month’s news of  our record nine CIPR PRide Awards shortlist.

First and foremost we’ll be welcoming a fresh face to Smoking Gun’s base camp from October, with Louise Woodward making the trans-Pennine journey to join our burgeoning team. Taking up a role as Account Director she’ll bring with her a wealth of experience working on consumer and B2B projects at leading agencies, in both Sheffield and Leeds, making a great addition to our burgeoning skill set.

What’s more, to accommodate her arrival, and in preparation for continued growth, we’re taking over the office next door. This of course means next time you call by we’ll have more conference and break out space than ever before, though we’re delighted to still be offering the same Greenhalgh’s cakes, Panda Liquorice, and well-brewed tea.

Away from internal changes it’s our great pleasure to announce we recently ranked third in a North West Business Insider poll of the Hottest PR Agencies in the region. As voted for by other professionals in the industry, that our position places us above many more established firms is certainly a source of some pride as we begin gathering ideas for new campaigns.

This reputation for quality work continues further afield too, with Big Gun Rick Guttridge recently contributing a guest column to the MEN Business Week’s media section. If you missed that then he will also be sharing some knowledge of all things digital PR related at the Digiterati forum in October; for information on attending the conference click here.

All of which just about sums August up, except to say that Team SGPR members are now training hard in preparation for the forthcoming Men’s Health Survival of the Fittest event. As the video below proves, it’s going to be quite the competition when it finally arrives, so follow this link to discover how you can challenge a Corrie star to a battle of speed, stamina and agility.

On top of that we also managed to show our faces at the opening of Manchester’s festival of new cinema and media, Abandon Normal Devices, along with the city’s monthly Social Media Cafe. So with sights now set on September, a month that will see 2013’s campaign budgets finalised and all manner of new projects launched, we’d best get back to work. See you in a few weeks then.

T Time: How Do is done

Monday, August 6th, 2012
Regular guest columnist, Tony Murray- managing editor of Gafencu Men magazine in Hong Kong, former editor of Adline, The Marketeer and The Drum- offers his own opinions, not that of Smoking Gun PR, on medialand’s latest news. Click here for his blog, and more of his thoughts.

It’s 5pm in old Hong Kong town and old Hong Kong town habits die hard.  Back in Blightyland it’s 10 am. Old ladies have, by now, been scrutinising Tesco’s vegetable aisle for only the finest radishes for nearly three hours, piles of today’s unread Metros are en route to be recycled into next week’s unread Metros and it’s time for How-do’s first update of the day.

Trepidation grips aficionados of the North West regional marketing and media scene, from Macclesfield to Mong Kok, from Wythenshawe to Wan Chai. What will this new day bring? Which PR consultancy will be claiming a client of seven-years-standing as a new win? Which digital agency will have amicably parted company with whom? Which transparent company re-branding exercise precedes a looming liquidation, well-known to all, apparently, save the How-do Crew? The community aggogles.

Sadly, in a little corner of England with the M3 postcode, it is forever Tuesday May 8th. About four O’Clock. With Groundhog Day predictability, Sly Bailey has, once again, resigned as chief exec of Trinity Mirror, Creative Concern is still looking to re-brand the new Cornerhouse and Karen Young, co-founder of the “Manchester-based integrated agency KMS Media” has, apparently, wrapped The Wrap. Forever.

Some things smack of serendipity. Whose morning would not be brightened by forever re-reading of Sly Bailey’s dismissal, the woman to whom the “Bring Back Maxwell” ceramic mug industry owes the whole of its turnover? Why was she ever appointed? Trinity Mirror senior appointment-making top guys, the clue was in the name. Learn a lesson and strike Sneaky Bushmills off your short-list now.

Fair play to Karen Young, though, she maintained one vital How-do tradition to the end. Her farewell Wrap was self-serving, lacking in insight and mentioned football. It was as if she knew. (For those still curious as to the name Creative Concern opted for for the transplanted Cornerhouse, I’m reliably informed it was “Beryl”).

On a more serious note, for five years How-do served the industry well. As an on-line brand, it came from nowhere, the product of proprietor Nick Jaspan’s post-Northwest Enquirer brooding. It emerged at a time when the Manc community, in particular, was facing its biggest change since the fax made regional sales representation obsolete (somewhere around 1986). It was, of course, the news that one of the world’s biggest broadcasters was coming to town – well the bit of it that comments on speedway races and makes primary-coloured non-peak time fare for prepubescents and stoned stus.

It would be invidious to single out one individual story or thread that nurtured the North West community’s love affair with How-Do, though it’s on-going fascination with Channel M and bemused pursuit of Michael Welch (the ill-starred fraudster who defrauded the NWDA of £440,000 before it had the chance to squander it on “hearts and minds” campaigns and pitching processes of bewildering length and complexity) strike me as particular highlights.

In the end, it was the sheer volume and variety of material that How-do carried that has ensured it is missed to this day. It may have lacked a degree of editorial judgment, allowing a number of organizations to get away with pretty much anything this side of nun-buggery but, in the end, it was this ‘honest broker’ approach that ensured it lasted as long as it did. How-do bore no grudges and made no judgements. It didn’t unduly promote advertisers, nor smite those that declined to help with the gas bill – a lesson that others in the sector should learn from, but won’t.

During its five-year run, How-do became part of the daily routine for media owners, PR consultants, advertising agencies, digital companies, designers and even seemed to crack the client market. It went on to stage the How-do Awards, the NW industry’s largest annual awards gathering since the hey-day of the Roses (any day pre-August 1999 frankly).

It departed the scene just as the BBC move that inspired its launch finally became a reality. The volume of material that was its every day diet is now restricted to individual company’s websites and the occasional nib on the MEN Monday media page.

Is this a loss? Well yes. The mere existence of How-do was a testimony to the vibrancy and diversity of the North West media and marketing community. Even the bits of it that are in Liverpool. No other area of the UK, outside of London, could have sustained such an on-line entity.

Will it be back? Well no. I doubt it. The wrangling that surrounded the abortive merger between How-do and Manchester Confidential has left Nick Jaspan, the project’s undoubted auteur, unlikely to return to the fray.

Even Mark “Gordo” Garner the serial-proprietor behind ManCon could not replace Jaspan at the How-do helm, though we should be grateful for the mature, reputation-enhancing and dignified manner with which he has comported himself since HD’s unfortunate demise.

How do. How did. How done.

How-do.co.uk may be gone, but you can still get nearly 40 per cent off a glass of prosecco at the Kaleido Bar and Grill (near Urbis) thanks to ManCon.
God bless yer.

A weekly roundup of talking points, sans effort

Worth the paper it’s printed on?

Last week’s light news success stories included…

…Prometheus, the biggest and maybe best film of the year so far, with 45 articles reporting on Ridley Scott’s return to the Alien franchise, whereas the French journalist kidnapped by FARC rebels in Columbia was released, and made it into just 7…

…Leanne Mitchell winning The Voice, with 24 stories spreading the news, in contrast Tibetan protestors set themselves on fire in Lhasa and only 12 pieces ran…

…and finally, BBC’s The Apprentice finishes, and hit 44 headlines, whilst a Dana Air flight crash in Nigeria killed all 153 passengers on board but only reached 10.

For many journalists Getty Images is a first point of call when looking for stunning shots, as such you’d think the firm could do without advertising. Thankfully the bosses disagree, and commissioned this montage of 873 individual pictures, which tell the universal story of life, from love’s first kiss to the golden bingo years.

What is it about U.S. Republican politicians and perceived stupidity? Current Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney’s latest idea suggests he may follow in the footsteps of George W Bush by becoming a laughing stock. In short, when designing an iPhone app to overlay your political slogan over any photo, make sure you spell America correctly. Cue Twitter trend, for all the wrong reasons…

Directioners RESPECT Zerrie

We’re thinking RIP as an acronym for Really Important Person (Bieber, Ga Ga) may not catch on in the wider world outside Twitter’s legions of teen pop lovers. Other than that Demi Is Not Like The Rest doesn’t refer to Miss Moore, but instead nods to a lyric in Demi Lovato’s song, Give Your Heart A Break.

Land Rovers are hard wearing and tough. Inspired by this the company’s UAE arm decided to send out survival packs to 5,000 existing customers, detailing all manner of animals, plants, and the topography of the Arabian Desert. The book came bound in reflective metal (which people can use to cook or attract attention), and when eaten has roughly the nutritional value of a cheeseburger. Genius.

A return to Cosgrove Hall?

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

Well, not likely. In 2009 Manchester’s most famous animation studios closed its doors for the last time, and then two years later Mark Hall, the co-founder and creator of its most famous export- Danger Mouse- died aged 74.

But don’t worry though, it’s not all old, bad news, because for the last few weeks there has been widespread talk about Cosgrove Hall Fitzpatrick Entertainment (the company run by Hall’s son, Simon) looking for new office space in Manchester, and £2.3million of external investment, in order to fully re-launch after the firm was resurrected last year. Apparently they have a new show, which is the catalyst for this move- Pip!, which is aimed at pre-school kids.

50 new jobs could be created if all goes to plan, which is great news for the region’s creative industries. Obviously this also comes at a time when, thanks to the whole MediaCity project, there are plenty of options available to those looking for suitable professional accommodation in this line of work. With this in mind we’ve put together a few choice clips made at the award winning studio’s former Chorlton base, as those in charge start planning for future facilities.

April 2012 in the Smoking Gun study

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

Weather wise it’s been a mixed bag lately. Dry heat fell into damp cold as the month got going, with only moderate improvements emerging in the last few days. Thankfully though, with a new client and a host of fresh projects, we’ve had plenty on our minds other than the outside temperature.

Firstly let’s introduce the latest addition to our client list, Durgol. A major force in the European domestic consumables market, the brand, which manufactures household cleaning products, is now launching in the UK with a coffee machine de-limescaler. The firm has charged us to deal with both consumer and trade media responsibilities, and so our experience in the homes, food, and drink industries will no doubt be put to good use.

Here at Smoking Gun we’ve also developed a strong reputation working with sports clients, from Manchester United to Burrda. That’s part of the reason we feel so confidently about our ability to meet the requirements set out by Men’s Health magazine when we were hired to handle public relations for its forthcoming Survival of the Fittest challenge.

These contests have been held in UK cities for a couple of years now, but this is the first time our hometown will host the competition. Next month will see a demo event held in Spinningfields, with sporting types racing across an urban obstacle course. The spectacle will give people a great idea of what’s set to happen come September, when the public can get involved for the inaugural Manchester edition, with previous instalments having looked something like this:

On top of all that our team will also be helping promote the forthcoming Travel, Leisure & Tourism North Conference. May 24th sees the illustrious Chester Racecourse welcome professionals from said sectors, who will converge to discuss developments, trends, and issues in their industries, with the focus on England’s northern regions. Naturally it gives us great pleasure to be working alongside the organisers, and our part as sponsor is indicative of a commitment to assisting in retaining and improving the wider local economy.

Like we said, there’s a lot going on right now, and things are only set to get busier as the summer months start setting in. Long days, and often even longer nights are fast approaching, bringing with them Britain’s outdoor, cafe-culture season and all its numerous events. Needless to say we’re looking forward to the opportunities this time of year brings, whilst staying firmly focused on the work at hand, albeit with two fingers crossed the next few months deliver at least a few warm weeks.

March 2012 in the Smoking Gun Study

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

Warmer weather is now a reality for most parts of the UK, meaning spring has finally sprung. We’ve got plenty to be upbeat about too, what with two national award wins, a new ecommerce client, and more Pandas loose on the streets.

Not that we’re bragging. But then picking up both the Freshest Small Team and Freshest Digital Media or Social Networking Campaign trophies at the recent Fresh Awards in Manchester is an achievement that makes us understandably a little proud, especially as the latter sees yet another accolade bestowed on our work with a certain liquorice treat.

On top of this it give us great pleasure to mention that the Smoking Gun team has also picked up a nomination for Best Social Media Agency at the up coming How-Do Awards. Needless to say we’ll let you know how things go in due course. Such nods of approval don’t come without hard work mind, and there’s been plenty of that over the last month too.

After a successful pitching process Loving Outdoors, an online outdoor clothing retailer, has joined our burgeoning client list. So we’ll be focusing on product placement within on and offline media, and ensuring things fit nicely with the company’s trading calendar. Suffice to say, our experience with the likes of Mountain Hardwear will come in more than useful here.

Elsewhere plenty of hours have been dedicated to our current roster of brands, including our favourite health food snack. To give away much more would ruin the surprise, but let’s just say that our panda suit has seen plenty of action over the last few weeks as the company found the eye of the tiger in a brand new video campaign, full details of which are soon to be revealed.

Of course we’ve been perfectly willing to meet new contacts and share our knowledge with interested outside parties too. From appearances at the inaugural Hedgehog Awards with the PRCA- run in conjunction with our friends at Don’t Panic- to Manchester’s ever useful Social Media Cafe, representatives from Smoking Gun have been on hand to help develop ideas with others, in the industry and beyond. A successful 31 days all round then, eyes in the office are now firmly focused on the lighter evenings ahead, and the new opportunities they will bring.

Worth the paper it’s printed on?

Last week’s light news success stories included…

…Rihanna’s semi-naked pictures of her own hair, which led to 67 articles, whereas Ken Clark’s reaction to concerns that extending secret courts could impede open justice only made it into 8…

…Katy Perry’s new boyfriend, the subject of 36 stories, whilst Steve Hilton, the Prime Minister’s ‘resident guru’ leaves for America on sabbatical and only appeared in 30…

…and finally, X Factor judge Tulisa gets a tan and a new man, making 26 headlines, more than the 18 that reported on the Indian elections and the country’s ruling party suffering setbacks therein.
